HELP! Where did my pictures go?

With one week remaining in which to create and order photo books in time for holiday giving, we are receiving a few calls for help regarding the mystery of the "missing picture file" and picture resolutions registering at 0.

So, what's going on?  Is there a grinch in your computer ? A Scrooge "bah-humbug"-ing your attempts to create the perfect, personal, heart-felt holiday gift of a photo book custom created by you?

I think I can help you:  Create a folder specific to each photo book, card or calendar project you are working on! Put copies of all of the pictures you wish to use in that project in that folder.  Our software operates differently than online photo book companies where you upload your pictures to a folder in cyberspace.  Freeze Frame Publishing's software resides ON your computer, there is no uploading of pictures required.  Our software looks for your pictures to be in the same place each time.  For example, if your pictures came from a CD or a flash drive and you remove the CD or flashdrive you will get an error message of "Missing picture file" because your picture files are no longer in their original place.

By creating a specific folder for each photo project you are working on, you will never get a "missing picture file" message because your pictures will remain in the same place for the software to "find" them.

Hope this helps.  If you have any questions please contact us, we're here to help.  And if you have a question about a process, chances are someone else has the same question!

Please visit our web site for information on our products and services or to download our FREE software for photo books, cards, and calendars.

We welcome your comments and suggestions.

Fast Track Photo Books from Freeze Frame Publishing!

In a hurry?  No time to make a photo book to commemorate that special occasion?  In less than 10 minutes you can create a photo book using Fast Track from Freeze Frame Publishing!

1.  Open the photo book program and select either the Create New Book or Fast Track option.

2. Select Fast Track

To create our Classic 8.5" x 11" landscape photo book, select the Landscape option. Click Next.

3.  Select the Keyhole Cover option for our Classic 8.5" x 11" Landscape photo book.

4.  Select a theme.  For this example I chose Clean (white page backgrounds). When the book wizard is finished and before you order your photo book you can add or change background images if you like using the stock backgrounds (available in the software and accessed through the backgrounds tab near the bottom of the screen) or your own pictures.

5. You will now select your pictures. TIP: Create a folder with the pictures you wish to use in this photo book.  The Fast Track program uses ALL the pictures you select.  It will save you time if you pre-select your pictures.

6.  Select the pictures you wish to use.  For this example I created a folder, Bowl Party, with all of the pictures I wish to use in this photo book.  I clicked the Select All option from the top tool bar. You can also select individual pictures, but this will add time to your book building.

7.  This Fast Track book will have 36 pages and use all 108 pictures I selected.  The more pictures you select, the more pages your finished book will have. Approximately 60 pictures are needed for a Fast Track 20-page photo book.  Remember: you can always edit your photo book by removing or adding pictures and pages before placing your order.

8.  To place your pictures in a specific order, select Preview Pictures.

9. Click, drag, and drop your pictures in the order you want them to appear in your book. For this example, I chose the picture I wanted on the first page.

10.  Add a caption to your first page.  If you do not want a caption, leave this area blank and click Next to finish.

11.  You're Finished!  Before placing your order you can view each page and add captions, change backgrounds, change picture layouts and sizes if you like.  Send to FreezeFrame and leave the rest to us!  Remember to Share Online with friends and family.  You can send anyone on your email list a virtual copy of your newly, quickly created photo book.  Click the Share Online button and follow the prompts. TIP: send the virtual photo book to yourself and forward the link to all of your friends and family. This method will save you time, too.

We hope you enjoy using our Fast Track wizard.  If you have any questions, please email me.

We welcome your comments and suggestions.

Little People Tips from Photographer Andrea Booker

Andrea Booker, professional photographer, continues her series of tips and suggestions for usHer post today gives us pointers in working with young children.

Let's talk about photographing children (affectionately called little people).  Little people are always full of surprises as most of us know.  They say funny things, cry, jump, run, give you the 'look,'  frown when you want them to smile, smile when you want their 'serious look,'  and look away when you want them to look at you.  Most little people are even cute when they're mad and simply glowing when they are happy or excited about something.  For me personally, photographing children is a very rewarding challenge and I enjoy it very much.

So, how can you prepare your little ones for their photo sessions?  Here are a few tips to consider:

*Unless it's a first birthday picture, have their bellies full.  For those one-year-old cake moments, you don't want your baby overly hungry, but we'll let the cake top off their little tanks.

*For little babies, it's best to take their pictures when their bellies are full and their diapers aren't.  It's also good to have a backup picture outfit for just-in-case purposes.

*Have them dressed in their photo session outfits.  The less of a deal it is to get settled in at the session location, the easier it will be to take their pictures.  We'll try to be quick during the session so your little one isn't too bored or otherwise uninterested.

*Toys?  If there are one or two small toys that your child/children love, yes, bring them.  We can play a few quick games with them to get some fun smiles from the little ones.  Please make sure these toys are clean and in as good repair as possible as they may end up in the pictures.

*Props?  A family I photograph very frequently LOVES props and it's really so much fun for me as a photographer to see what goodies they bring with them.  This last time, they brought an old Radio Flyer wagon, put the cute little one in the back and we took the shot.  It's so rewarding to be able to provide the family with the picture they had in their heads.  So, props are always fun; just talk with your photographer first to give them a heads up.  They might have a specific prop already so you wouldn't have to worry about bringing it with you.

*If there are any areas of concern with your child participating in the session, please let your photographer know in advance so that they may be better prepared.  For example, some children are afraid of balloons, so the photographer would need to know not to use balloons in the session.  Also, let your photographer know of any allergies as some will use treat 'bribes' or other attention grabbing tools.

As a parent or participant in the session, even if you aren't getting your photo taken, please be prepared to help.  The photographers can direct the helpers where they need them to help to reduce confusion, distraction and chaos.  However,  here is a quick list of participant actions I strongly recommend parents/participants NOT do:

*Both parents playing peek-a-boo or jumping up and down or hollering to their child(ren).  Not only is this behavior distracting to the child, it's also distracting to the photographer.  If the child(ren) react to these actions by the parents, wonderful, but please, one at a time.

*Please stand behind the photographer while still giving them room to work and change positions.

*Please don't yell or loudly instruct the child(ren) to smile or otherwise react to the photo session.

It has been my experience that these actions do not end up with the most wonderful results.  We try to keep the sessions fun, moving, and memorable for the whole family so that next time, little 'Suzie' will be excited to go have her pictures taken rather than run away from the photographer.  It's much more fun for me when the child(ren) recognize me as "the picture lady" and are ready to get down to business for a fun and fabulous photo session.

These are my tips, opinions, and experiences.

The two photographs are of Rilynn's 9-month photo session--so cute!

Join me next time for tips on session location possibilities.

Andrea Hudleston Booker Blog Post #2: Why Hire a Professional Photographer

This is the second post from local professional photographer, Andrea Hudleston Booker.
To illustrate the importance of using professionals let me narrate a very true and personal story. A few months ago after my $30 haircut (wash, cut and style), I thought it would be a great idea to further update my look with some highlights. After just spending money on my hair, I wanted to do it "the more affordable way," meaning my then fiance and I could 'handle it' with a $15 box of color from our local store.
To make a longer story short and to save myself a bit of embarrassment,  the outcome was not so good and I ended up calling a professional at 10:30 p.m. with my hair emergency. Luckily for me, my professional hair-saver, as we'll call him, was able to meet me at the salon bright and early the following morning to bring my locks to their true potential (or at least much better than we had done). Total cost to fix my hair, $120! Had we opted to hire the professional from the beginning to handle my job, we would have saved approximately $40; and these days, $40 is a lot of money.
In closing, professionals are labeled professionals because they have experience and training in their specific specialties. Sure, just as anyone can take a picture and anyone can highlight a person's hair does not imply that the outcome will be satisfactory in any way. Let's leave highlights as well as your Single Moments to the professionals.
-Andrea

"Mama's in Time Out" with Freeze Frame Publishing

Kiki, a busy mother and blogger from Greer, South Carolina, took "time out" of her busy schedule to make a photo book for her son.

"The whole process was fun and easy...I decided to create this book with lil' D and use his 'words' on the pages. We had so much fun and enjoyed looking at his old photographs together," she writes.

You can see pictures of Kiki's book and read her post on her blog "Mama's in Time Out."

Thanks, Kiki, for the kinds words and the great idea of making a book WITH your young children.  She 'froze time' and her young son's 'voice' in the captions that appeared throughout his book.  I'm sure he will cherish this book and one day enjoy sharing it with his own children.

Andrea Huddleston Guest Post #1: Why Photographers Charge So Much

Today, Andrea Huddleston, professional photograper, contributes her first post: Why Photographers Charge So Much!  She also has a photo taking tip for us!

"The great thing about the world we live in today is that we have choices. So many in fact that it is sometimes much easier (and more cost effective) to opt out of hiring professionals for certain services.  With more and more digital camera choices available to consumers, why do professional photographers charge so much?  Let's discuss this with a hypothetical example of a two-hour senior portrait session:

-one hour (+/-) travel time to and from the session
-two hours of shooting
-15 minutes of set-up, preparation, talking to the client, etc.
-15 minutes to load the photos on to the computer (let's use 250 images as an example)
-For editing, let's say an average of four minutes per image to look thorugh them, edit as necessary or needed, saving a copy for print, a copy for proofing as well as backing up both sets of files. This equals a little over 16 1/2 hours with the resulting images from the session.

Just under 20 hours of total time is spent on the above sentior portrait session, not including creative brainstorming.

While some photographers charge a sitting fee or a session fee, and/or other fees, for our example there are no additional fees just print packages that are offered to clients.  Let us assume that the parents of the senior we photographed above want 15 sheets of prints (Single Moments Photography --Friends and Family Print Package for $190).  The hourly wage of the photographer is now $12.67. Considering only the time that goes into the senior's (and parents') full experience, the hourly wage is now $9.50. This 'wage' does not include the cost of the equipment, education or training, software, travel expenses, professional grade printing equipment (or shipping fees if the prints are obtained from a non-local vendor) or any other costs associated with photography.

So, why do professional photographers charge SO much? A 'simple' two-hour shoot requires time spent preparing, shooting, editing, and possibly traveling.  You're paying for so much more than just someone pushing a button on a camera--talent, time, creativity, and a special experience for you and your graduating senior to enjoy.

Join me next time when I discuss the importance of hiring professionals.

-Andrea

TIP #1:
Always try to shoot "into the shade."  Find a shady place rather than full sun for better results in your images.  See the examples below.

This picture was taken in full sun.

This picture was taken in full shade.

Joy of Photo Stories: blog post by Jen Mitchell

Jen Mitchell, a busy mother of four juggling home, family and career, took time to review our software recently. She wrote about her memories of a blue vinyl photo album, of family stories told again and again. "[Photos]... are keepers of stories, of history, my family's history."

"With digital photos being on the computer the whole part of sharing their story is lost. Sure my digital pictures all tell the story of the events that they captured but who gets to hear that story when they are all nicely organized and categorized on the computer? I have not prints to handle, no books to look through," she adds.

We are happy to report that Jen loved our software!   "I went to their site, downloaded the Free software and in one nap time, I had made a book of photos. A tangible book that my children can hold and we can look at together."

See the book Jen made, as well as read her blog post on her blog site.

Thanks, Jen for the good words.

Man Camp: Photo Books for the Men in Your Life!

The end of July marks an annual ritual for the men in my family:  FISHING!  Every year for the past 20+ years the Postema males head to parts north: a full day's drive to get to the lodge for 'check-in,' then a 2 hour boat ride to the secluded cabin on Windermere Lake. Lots of pictures are taken, proof of just how big the biggest catch of the season was... and just who caught the biggest catch.

Stories of Fish Camp Past are shared, shore lunches eaten, naps taken--new memories made.

Why not surprise the men in your life with a photo book that you create just for them?  Photo books make their stories easy to remember, easy to share... and maybe even easy to brag! I know my family looks forward to their photo books of Fish Camp ... almost as much as attending Fish Camp itself.
Here is this year's photo book.

Building Your 2010 Calendar--July

We've had lots and lots of hummingbirds in our yard this year. Ken spent a half hour one afternoon snapping pictures of the hummingbirds at the feeder on our porch. We have two different hummingbirds on our July calendar page.

It's not too early for you to start your 2010 calendar! Here are a few tips to help make your year-long calendar building experience a good one:

1. Create and label a folder for your calendar pictures. Add pictures you wish to use in your calendar. You can continue to add pictures throughout the year.

2. Reminder: Keep your calendar pictures in a folder and keep the folder in the same place! Each time you open any saved photo project, the software looks for your pictures and expects that they are in the same folder in the same place on your computer. Should you receive a "missing image file" warning in one of your saved projects, check that your picture and picture folder have not been moved to a different location, or deleted altogether!

3. Open the calendar program; drag your calendar folder to the picture tray on the left side of the screen. To add new pictures to your calendar picture tray, open your calendar folder, click and drag the new pictures you wish to add. The example below illustrates how to add new pictures.

Please see our past blog posts on building our 2010 calendar for more tips and ideas. Type 'calendars' in the search bar at the top of the screen from our blog page.

Linkable results will follow.

Upcoming Events with Freeze Frame Publishing

There is still plenty of summer left, but we are busy planning for a big fall filled with lots of opportunities for you.

If you are in the Greater Grand Rapids area, look for us in two local school districts: Sparta Area Schools and Lowell Schools. We will be conducting evening workshops in October and November. Sign up if you are like me and need a little extra push to get that photo book built! Specific dates will be forthcoming. The charge for these workshops is $40 which includes a software CD and one 20-page Classic photo book. The best part of the workshops though is concentrated time to start and finish your photo book... in time for holiday giving!

If you are a scrap booker, you can find us at two scrap book events in November. The first weekend finds us in Mt. Clemens, the second weekend in Birch Run. Our booth will be slightly different than usual in that we will be displaying and selling 12x12 background pages as well as a variety of paper for your hand-made cards and scrap booking needs. More details on these events to follow.

Watch our blog for examples of 12x12 background pages that were made using Freeze Frame Publishing's FREE downloadable software. You can create your own background pages for your scrap books, simply use our 12x12 book program and when you are finished, contact us for instructions on submitting your file.

Watch for our coupon in the upcoming Local First coupon book. We are very excited to be a part of this local fund raising program this year. Check the Local First web site for information on this promotion as well as other activities in our community.

And a quick plug for our upcoming 20-20-20 special. This may be the perfect opportunity to get that family history book completed! Twenty copies of our 20-page Classic photo book for $20 each. Contact us for help in getting your documents and pictures scanned into digital format. See our services page on our web site for more details on the services we offer.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! Take lots of pictures! Be thinking about holiday gifts for your friends and family using your digital pictures and Freeze Frame Publishing's FREE downloadable software!

Ken's Bird Book!

We're getting a lot of mileage out of our spring boarders! We used the "choir" shot (below) on our June calendar page; I've printed posters of the little guys, too. And now... Ken built a photo book that tells the story of the two pine trees and the birds who lived there.

We've posted a link to the bird book on our home page, but you can access Ken's book here. The share online feature of our software is an added option that allows you to share your newly created photo books with friends and family. See our prior blog post for details in using this feature.

Ken selected the "lay flat" book option found in the drop down menu of the photo book software. He also created an identical book in the 12x12 format. He printed that in lay flat to see how the finished product would look. It looks FABULOUS! Watch for information on the availability of 12x12 lay flat books that you create. Pictures and a thorough description of our lay flat photo books will appear in an upcoming blog post.

We invite you to download our FREE software and give it a try as you frame your memories forever. Our software for photo books, cards and calendars is very flexible and easy to use. All of our products are fully customizable from page backgrounds to fonts, templates, page layouts, picture borders and enhancements. Our blog has many tips, ideas, and suggestions to aid you in framing your special memories forever.

If you have slow internet connection, or no internet connection, request a disc and we will send our software to you! You can also sign up to receive our blog posts emailed directly to your in- box! Please visit our web site for more information on all of our products and services.
